In the previous chapter, we configured centralized logging to capture textual event data. Monitoring complements that by capturing time-series numeric data, providing the quantitative insight needed for capacity planning and SLO compliance.
In this chapter, you will learn what Prometheus is and how to configure the Prometheus-based monitoring solution, available on OpenShift by default. It also offers a few examples of important cluster-level metrics, as well as explains how to enable monitoring for user-defined projects. Finally, it shows you how to create expressions in Prometheus Query Language (PromQL) for complex queries and use dashboards to identify and interpret business-critical indicators. All these skills are important for providing stakeholders, developers, and SREs with the necessary tools to observe business-critical application metrics and the underlying infrastructure.
