In this chapter, we’ll introduce service mesh and distributed tracing and show how they map to OpenShift. A service mesh adds a dedicated layer for service-to-service communication – making it easier to apply consistent policies for security and traffic management – while distributed tracing helps you follow a single request across multiple services so you can pinpoint where latency and errors originate.
We’ll focus on Red Hat OpenShift Service Mesh and how it fits into real enterprise operations: installing and understanding the operator-driven architecture, onboarding workloads safely, and using the platform tooling to troubleshoot production-style issues. As more organizations adopt microservices, these capabilities become less of a “nice to have” and more of a baseline for operating reliably at scale.
