Summary

A vMotion network is required for vMotion and cross-host Storage vMotion. Configuring a VMkernel port on each ESXi host for vMotion traffic creates this network. Migration using vMotion moves a virtual machine's state to a different ESXi host with no downtime while the virtual machine is actively running. Migration using Storage vMotion moves a virtual machine's files to a different datastore with no downtime while the virtual machine is actively running. A virtual machine can change host and datastore simultaneously while powered on using a cross-host Storage vMotion. Cross-host Storage vMotion is only available using the vSphere Web Client with platform Version 5.1 or newer.

The next chapter will discuss cluster features such as DRS, Storage DRS, and High Availability.
