Clusters

A cluster is a collection of ESXi hosts with shared CPU and memory resources. Clusters not only are helpful in organizing your environment but also provide many advanced features. Some of these are as follows:

  • Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS)

  • High Availability (HA)

  • Distributed Power Management (DPM)

  • Enhanced vMotion Compatibility (EVC)

  • Virtual SAN (VSAN)

We will discuss the DRS and HA features in this chapter.

EVC can help alleviate CPU compatibility issues across a cluster. See http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1003212 for more information.

When DPM is enabled, DRS places, or recommends that you place, ESXi hosts in the standby power mode if sufficient excess capacity is found. It will also power on, or recommend that you power on, ESXi hosts if additional capacity is needed. For more information on DPM, see http://kb.vmware.com/kb/2007560.

VSAN is a directly attached software-defined product that creates shared storage. For more information on VSAN, see http://www.vmware.com/products/virtual...
