Understanding DPM Protection Groups


This recipe explains what a protection group is in System Center Data Protection Manager and the different configurable options that it can contain.

Getting ready

When you have come to the point in your DPM deployment where you have your DPM servers up and running and the agents deployed and attached, you are ready to create your definition of protection that will reflect the restore plan for your company's services. The definition of how you should protect something is defined in something called a Protection Group.

A protection group can be seen as a container that you fill with additional information to reflect the actual need for a backup. You define whether you want the protected data to be stored on disk, tape, or in azure; this is what Microsoft calls recovery goals. There are two types of recovery goals:

  • Short-Term recovery goals

  • Long-Term recovery goals
