Optimizing the Protection Group


This recipe will cover how to optimize a protection group configuration so it fits the organization's data center.

Getting ready

When you have set up a protection group that defines the backup settings for a protected data source that maps to your restore plans, you may find the need of optimizing the protection group configuration.

How to do it...

There are five important configuration methods to optimize a protection group:

  • Enable network throttling

  • Enable data compression

  • Provide staggering

  • Create your replica manually

  • Alter the Express-Full schedule

The network throttling, manual replica creation, and altering the Express-Full schedule methods are covered in corresponding recipes in this chapter.

If you modify a protection group or create a new one, you have the ability to optimize the protection group in two ways:

  • Via the Protection Group Wizard

  • Via the DPM console
