Configuring Windows Update


Microsoft provides patches to the currently supported operating systems and other products on a regular basis. Most of these are made available on the second Tuesday of each month, or what has come to be known as "Patch Tuesday". This is the typical release cycle for most security-related patches as well, although truly critical updates can be made available at any time. The standard delivery method for these patches is Windows Update. Access to this repository can be entirely automated, if desired.

Unfortunately, Microsoft's track record of releasing quality updates is somewhat spotty. Some have rendered systems to be completely unusable. For a Hyper-V host, this could have catastrophic effects. On the other hand, not applying security updates places the system at a high risk of compromise. Many vulnerabilities already have known exploits before they are ever patched, but the publication of a patch often leads to a rash of malware intended to exploit the very vulnerability...
