An Azure subscription is always attached to a Microsoft account or Organizational account. A subscription is a contract with Microsoft in which the consumption of cloud resources and optional support has been purchased.

Each account can manage up to 50 subscriptions. Each subscription can have a different so-called plan. A plan is an agreement about payment. It can be pay as you go, in which the customer pays at the end of the month for the consumed resources. Microsoft also has plans for customers committing themselves to Azure for a couple of months. Subscriptions can have one of the three available levels of support.

The person who creates the account is the account administrator for all subscriptions created in that account. That person is also the default service administrator for the subscription. The account administrator cannot be changed by the customer. A call to Microsoft support is needed to change the account administrator.
