So far we have covered the concepts of compute, storage, and network monitoring. Now we are ready to dive into the counters. While we will not be covering the counters in esxtop, we are going to cover the counters in both vCenter and vRealize Operations. These three tools serve different purposes:

  • vCenter Server complements esxtop by providing a view across hosts and other objects in vSphere. However, its granularity is at an interval of 20 seconds.

  • vRealize Operations complements vCenter by extending the coverage beyond vSphere. It can go up to the application level or down to the physical infrastructure. It also allows you to slice and dice the combined data. However, its default granularity is at an interval of 5 minutes.
