Use case – network performance management

The target user for this use case is the network administrator.

Networking in the SDDC can be divided into three layers:

  • The first layer is the VM, which typically has only one vNIC. From a performance management point of view, this is relatively the simplest layer.

  • The second layer is the hypervisor, which has multiple components. The hypervisor has virtual switches, typically distributed across many hosts. The switches are connected to the physical NICs, which serve as uplinks. There are many settings and policies that can be applied to the switch and its port groups. With NSX, the hypervisor has a distributed router, a distributed firewall, and a load balancer. This layer can be quite complex to monitor.

  • The third layer is made up of the physical switches and routers in the data center. This also includes the WAN link and Internet connectivity. This layer is typically monitored by the network team. If the physical layer has a firewall and a load balancer...
