Restoring VM backup without vCenter


VDP—backup and recovery solution from VMware—offers the so called direct-to-host restore option, which makes it possible to recover virtual machines without vCenter Server.

Getting ready

Direct-to-host restore is supported starting from VDP 5.5. It is important to know the requirements for successful emergency restore:

  • The DNS required is available and configured properly for VDP appliance and the host it's running on.

  • The host VDP is running on has to be detached from vCenter.

How to do it...

Make sure the host VDP appliance is running on is detached from vCenter. If a host has to be detached, execute the following steps:

  1. In vCenter Client, right-click on the host and select Remove.

  2. In Web Client, right-click on the host, go to All vCenter Actions, and select Remove from Inventory.

Note

If the host is a part of a cluster, it has to be put into maintenance mode first.
