VSAN architecture types


The support for all-flash VSAN is perhaps the most significant enhancement on the previous generation of VSAN. This implies that we now have the following two types of disk group compositions for Virtual SAN:

  • Hybrid VSAN

  • All-flash VSAN

The VMware compatibility matrix has a field added to include whether the specific I/O controllers support the all-flash mode or the hybrid mode, or both.

Similarly, SSD devices include support explicitly if the device is suited and certified for the all-flash caching tier, the all-flash capacity tier, and the hybrid caching tier.
