Adding a user (useradd)


This recipe shows how to add a new user login to your Raspberry Pi.

Creating separate logins for different users (or for different purposes) helps improve the security of the Raspberry Pi and organize the use of the Raspberry Pi's filesystem by giving each user a home directory in which they can organize their files.

After completing this recipe, you will be able to add a new user to the Raspberry Pi.

Getting ready

The following ingredients are required for this recipe:

  • You will need an initial setup or a basic networking setup for the Raspberry Pi that has been powered on. You also need to be logged in as the user pi (refer to the recipes in Chapter 1, Installation and Setup, to learn how to boot and log in and the previous recipes in this chapter to understand how to log in remotely).

  • A network connection is an optional requirement.
