Understanding the startup process

Although it is completely technical, being able to identify and understand the hardware components in general, and the steps in the startup process in particular, has tremendous benefits. This is because it helps you in troubleshooting hardware-related problems, and so keeps downtime to a minimum.

To begin, let's take a look at the Basic Input/Output System (BIOS).

Understanding BIOS

BIOS (see Figure 11.10) is a program that controls the functionality of the server hardware components. Alongside this, the other important tasks of BIOS include identifying and configuring the hardware in a server and identifying the boot devices:
