Untangle NGFW network services


In this section, we are going to learn about the Untangle NGFW functionality as a router, DNS server, and DHCP server.

Untangle NGFW as a router

If we have a certain subnet that is not directly attached to an Untangle NGFW interface (that is, behind another local router), we will need to define how Untangle NGFW can reach this subnet (that is, the route to this subnet). If no route was set, all the traffic destined to this subnet will be directed to the default gateway instead.

Untangle NGFW only supports static routes. You can configure the routes by navigating to Config | Network | Routes.

To set a route, we will need to define the following settings:

  • The destination network: This is the remote subnet (for example, 10.0.5.0/8)

  • The Next Hop: This defines how we can reach the destination network (that is, the local router interface that is seen by the Untangle NGFW); there are two options to use as the next hop:

    • Using IP address: All traffic to the destination...
