Ceph is an open source distributed storage system that is scalable to Exabyte deployments. This second edition of Mastering Ceph takes you a step closer to becoming an expert on Ceph. You’ll get started by understanding the design goals and planning steps that should be undertaken to ensure successful deployments. In the next sections, you’ll be guided through setting up and deploying the Ceph cluster with the help of orchestration tools. This will allow you to witness Ceph’s scalability, erasure coding (data protective) mechanism, and automated data backup features on multiple servers. How to use librados

To get started with librados, a development environment is needed. For the examples in this chapter, one of the monitor nodes can be used to act as both the development environment and the client to run the developed application. The examples in this book assume you are using a Debian-based distribution:

  1. Install the base build tools for the operating system:
$ sudo apt-get install build-essential

The preceding command gives the following output:

  1. Install the librados development library:
$ sudo apt-get install librados-dev
