Discovering what ransomware is

What is ransomware? Ransomware is defined as maliciously created malware that finds and encrypts an organization's files and storage. Many ransomware attacks are generated through phishing emails or other means to get within an organization's network to begin an attack.

Ransomware typically is used to extort money from organizations in the form of a ransom (hence the name ransomware) to receive the required keys to unencrypt files, or you would need to rely on backups to restore them. However, many ransomware attacks seek out backups and documents within a network to encrypt them, requiring the victim to pay the criminals.

Veeam Backup & Replication has many ways to protect your data against ransomware. We have discussed two of them in this chapter – BaaS and DRaaS. By utilizing these and some other capabilities built into Veeam Availability Suite, you can safeguard your data against attacks.
