The research literature in time series visualization and scientific visualization is vast. We only learned about the main techniques that Mathematica offers to visualize our data, but the design and aesthetics issues are equally (or more) important. The Visualization Handbook, Charles D. Hansen and Chris R. Johnson, Academic Press, lists detailed methods of isosurface and other scientific visualization algorithms. Time series visualization designs are discussed in many books. A survey of different designs can be found at the link http://survey.timeviz.net/.
