Consistency in Cassandra refers to the guarantee that even though a read or write operation in a Cassandra cluster is written to or read from a desired number of nodes, all of them have the same latest data. For example, if we're writing to a Cassandra cluster of five nodes on a column family with a replication factor of 3
, we could specify, using consistency, how many nodes should respond to our read or write request in order to guarantee that data returned is the latest and is consistent across all nodes. For example, if the consistency is ONE
, the read operation is acknowledged as a success by coordinator node as soon as one node responds3. The consistency level is configurable in Cassandra and can be set per read or write operation.

Overview of this book
Apache Cassandra Essentials takes you step-by-step from from the basics of installation to advanced installation options and database design techniques. It gives you all the information you need to effectively design a well distributed and high performance database. You’ll get to know about the steps that are performed by a Cassandra node when you execute a read/write query, which is essential to properly maintain of a Cassandra cluster and to debug any issues. Next, you’ll discover how to integrate a Cassandra driver in your applications and perform read/write operations. Finally, you’ll learn about the various tools provided by Cassandra for serviceability aspects such as logging, metrics, backup, and recovery.
