Overview of this book

Beyond buzzwords like Big Data or Data Science, there are a great opportunities to innovate in many businesses using data analysis to get data-driven products. Data analysis involves asking many questions about data in order to discover insights and generate value for a product or a service. This book explains the basic data algorithms without the theoretical jargon, and you’ll get hands-on turning data into insights using machine learning techniques. We will perform data-driven innovation processing for several types of data such as text, Images, social network graphs, documents, and time series, showing you how to implement large data processing with MongoDB and Apache Spark.

Preface

Chapter 10. Working with Social Graphs

In this chapter, we will introduce the most basic features of graph analytics. Initially, we will distinguish the structure of a graph and a social network analysis. Then, we will present some of the basic operations with a graph, such as Degree and Centrality. Then, we will work in a graph representation using a visualization tool called Gephi to apply some statistical and visualization methods implemented on graphs, such as modularity classification, coloring nodes, and layout distributions. Finally, we will create our own visualization in D3.js for our friends graph.

This chapter will cover the following:

  • Social networks analysis

  • Working with graphs using Gephi

  • Statistical analysis of my graph (Degree and Centrality)

  • Graph visualization with D3.js
