Beyond sorting the data, Tableau provides many other ways to enhance visuals. Filters, sets, groups and hierarchies are some important ones. We will look at each in detail in this section, starting with filters.
Creating filters, sets, groups, and hierarchies
Filters
Filtering is a major part of data analysis. Tableau allows us to filter using dimensions or measures. Filtering in Tableau follows this order of operations:
- Extract filters
- Data source filters
- Context filters
- Filters on dimensions
- Filters on measures
To apply filters to any visual, drag the field to the Filters shelf, or select within the graph what to include/exclude. For example, to find Profit by Market for the Standard Class shipping mode, drag Ship Mode...
