The New Engineering Game

By: Tim Weilkiens

Overview of this book

Organizations today face an increasingly complex and dynamic environment, whatever their market. This change requires new systems that are built on the foundation of a new kind of engineering and thinking. The New Engineering Game closes the gap between high-level reflections about digitalization and daily engineering methods and tools. The book begins by describing the first three industrial revolutions and their consequences, and by predicting the fourth industrial revolution. Considering the fourth industrial revolution, it explains the need for a new kind of engineering. The later chapters of the book provide valuable principles, patterns, methods, and tools that engineering organizations can learn and use to succeed on the playfield of digitalization. By the end of the book, you’ll have all the information you need to understand the various concepts to take your first steps towards the world of digitalization.

Model-Based Engineering (MBE)

The Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) discipline – MBE with an "s" – is getting more and more popular. The primary language of MBSE is the OMG Systems Modeling Language (SysML) (Object Management Group: OMG Systems Modeling Language (OMG SysML), Version 1.5. formal/2017-05-01). SysML is only one of many possible modeling languages in the context of MBSE.

The intense use of models is only one piece of MBSE. The other one is systems engineering itself. Systems engineering is a wide-spanning discipline that covers many aspects of product engineering. Interdisciplinary Engineering, Chapter 3, The Context of the New Engineering Game, gives an introduction to systems engineering.

Model-based engineering (MBE) – without "system" (s) – goes a step further. The paper PLM4MBSE Working Group Position Paper. 10 theses about MBSE and PLM – Challenges and Benefits of Model-Based Engineering (MBE). GfSE – German...
