Chapter 7. System versus Silo

The word silo is overused today but it really does fit when talking about managing projects. Even though the word silo has negative connotations in today's world, many projects still function with a siloed approach to management. This is reinforced by the widespread use of the spreadsheet discussed in Chapter 4, The Almighty Spreadsheet. If the contract administrator, the submittal coordinator, the cost engineer, and the project manager all run spreadsheets to manage their information, they are running in their own little silos. At the risk of being stoned for this cliché, break down the silos and use an integrated system.
