SSIS 2012 has introduced four new functions that can be used to manipulate data in components such as the Derived Column Transformation componet. The new functions are:
Left: As its name implies, this takes the left-hand side of a string from a data source. It is useful for operations such as trimming strings, where the target column is not as wide as the source and truncation is deemed to be acceptable; one example would be when apping Male/Female to M/F.ReplaceNull: This is a very powerful feature that allows you to specify on a column by column basis, how nulls will be transformed from a data source.
