Time for action – creating the first Power View dashboard


In this example, you will face Power View for the first time. You will also learn how to connect to the SSAS Tabular model through Excel, and then use it as a source for Power View data visualization, as explained in the following steps:

  1. Open an empty Excel workbook, go to the Data tab, and under the Get External Data menu section, click on From Other Sources, and then choose From Analysis Services.

  2. The Data Connection Wizard will appear in the first step. Enter the server name (such as local\Tabular) and click on Next.

  3. In the Select Database and Table tab, choose AdventureWorks Tabular Model SQL 2012, and then choose the Model cube from the main section.

  4. Exit the wizard by clicking on Finish. The Import Data dialog box will appear. Choose Power View Report and click on OK to continue, as shown in the following screenshot:

  5. A new sheet will be opened and you will see a Power View designer environment.
