Time for action – creating a derived hierarchy


In this example, we will create a derived hierarchy from a product category, subcategory, and product. You will learn how to create a hierarchy in WebUI. You will also see how easy it is for an end user to make changes to hierarchies. This will be explored in the following steps:

  1. Open MDS WebUI, and then go to System Administration.

  2. Under the Manage menu, select Derived Hierarchies.

  3. Select PacktPub_BI_Model and add a hierarchy.

  4. Name the hierarchy Product Hierarchy and save it.

  5. In the Edit Derived Hierarchy window, drag-and-drop entities from the Available entities pane into the Current Levels pane in the following order: Product, Product Subcategory, and Product Hierarchy.

  6. After each drag-and-drop action, you will see a preview of results in the Preview pane. The following screenshot shows what the product category hierarchy looks like:

  7. Go back to the WebUI main window and select Explorer.

  8. From the Hierarchies menu, select Derived Hierarchy: Product...
