Building a Game with Unity and Blender

Overview of this book

In the wake of the indie game development scene, game development tools are no longer luxury items costing up to millions of dollars but are now affordable by smaller teams or even individual developers. Among these cutting-edge applications, Blender and Unity stand out from the crowd as a powerful combination that allows small-to-no budget indie developers or hobbyists alike to develop games that they have always dreamt of creating. Starting from the beginning, this book will cover designing the game concept, constructing the gameplay, creating the characters and environment, implementing game logic and basic artificial intelligence, and finally deploying the game for others to play. By sequentially working through the steps in each chapter, you will quickly master the skills required to develop your dream game from scratch.

Creating the grass texture

Next, we will create the texture for our grass. This is also a lot easier than you might have thought. First of all, using your choice of image editing software, draw out the shape of a clump using just plain color. You can use any tools you like, such as the paint tool, lasso tool, pen tool, and so on. It also doesn't need to be extremely accurate because we're going for a semi-realistic style. After you are done with the shape, apply a gradient color to it: darker green at the bottom and lighter green on top. Next, overlay a leaf texture on top of it to add some subtle details to the texture.

Then, you're done!

You can now apply the texture to the grass model and adjust the planes again until you're satisfied. Do refer to Chapter 2, Creating Characters, if you have forgotten how to apply the texture to your model.
