The Sweep modifier is a simplification of the Loft compound object. What Loft offers is a way to project geometry between different profiles along the path Spline. So, you can have a square shape at one end of the form, for example, and a round shape at the other end. The Sweep modifier cannot do this. The Loft modifier—given it can blend between profiles—has topology controls, so the user can achieve both the look they are after and a good wireframe to work with. A tool related to the Sweep and Loft modifiers is the Hose primitive.
