Overview of this book

Computer-aided design (CAD) uses computer systems to assist in the creation, modification, and analysis of a design. DraftSight is a 2D computer-aided design (CAD) software application. DraftSight includes all the main tools to draft with precision, and it works with DWG files, the most popular CAD file type. It runs on a wide variety of operating systems, including Windows, Mac, and Linux. Getting Started with DraftSight addresses all the main phases for executing and printing a mechanical project. These concepts and commands can easily be applied to other areas. Beginning with the very basic concepts, and going through all the necessary drawing steps, you will finish by printing a full scale mechanical drawing. Applying patterns


When there is the need to represent a section that includes material cut, the material must be correctly represented by a hatch. Also the representation of floor tiles, bricks, roof tiles, woods or other materials can be indicated by an adequate hatch pattern. Alternatively, it is possible to fulfill an area with a solid single color or a gradient between two colors. The following diagram illustrates the hatches application:

The HATCH command (alias H, on the Draw toolbar, or Draw | Hatch/Fill main menu) allows the user to apply hatches. The command displays a dialog box with several areas.

In Type it is possible to choose between a Hatch (pattern of lines or solid fill) or a Fill (gradient, presented later). In Pattern, the Type list includes three possibilities: Predefined, User-defined and Custom. The Preview button allows the user to preview the hatch application and the OK button applies it.
