Video production pointers


When you begin to produce videos for your course, the first thing to understand is that there are two main approaches to recording them:

  • Screen recording: This method is most useful to teach software programs or export PowerPoint presentations; these videos allow a student to follow along as you demonstrate a piece of software using your computer or tablet. To enhance the quality of these videos, many instructors adopt a picture-in-picture approach that features them talking while the main portion of the screen displays the software being demonstrated. They are typically simpler to record and often easier to edit.

  • Live action: These videos require an individual to stand in front of a camera and speak to the camera. You can also add on-screen graphics to complement the spoken words of the instructor and to visually illustrate concepts.
