Raspberry Pi Zero Cookbook

Overview of this book

The Raspberry Pi Zero, one of the most inexpensive, fully-functional computers available, is a powerful and revolutionary product developed by the Raspberry Pi Foundation. The Raspberry Pi Zero opens up a new world for the makers out there. This book will give you expertise with the Raspberry Pi Zero, providing all the necessary recipes that will get you up and running. In this book, you will learn how to prepare your own circuits rather than buying the expensive add–ons available in the market. We start by showing you how to set up and manage the Pi Zero and then move on to configuring the hardware, running it with Linux, and programming it with Python scripts. Later, we integrate the Raspberry Pi Zero with sensors, motors, and other hardware. You will also get hands-on with interesting projects in media centers, IoT, and more.

Changing RPZ configuration settings from the command line

Now that we are quickly becoming command-line masters, let's see what sort of hacking we can do with the Raspberry Pi configuration. We've done a little of this before with the USB OTG hacks; let's find out what other interesting settings we can change in the system.

Getting ready

We're going to continue working from the terminal and do a few things that aren't possible in raspi-config.

How to do it...

  1. The key file to edit the Raspberry Pi Zero's startup configuration is /boot/config.txt. Let's take a look at the entire file. We have already edited that to enable USB OTG gadget functionality, but there are a ton of settings that can be added to it. Let's add the following to the config.txt file. It is a good idea to make a backup copy if you haven't already. Append the following settings to the bottom of the config.txt file:

    gpu_mem=96

  2. After rebooting, the GPU memory will be increased from the default of 64 MB to 96 MB. This gives a...
