Understanding performance


Performance is work done that meets a certain set of criteria. So every 'good performance' must have 'work done' plus meeting or exceeding other criteria about the work done. If either the work is not done or other criteria are not met, it would be hard to consider it as good performance.

Depending on the task, there are different levels of expectation. Consider this scenario: the task is to deliver a package from point A to point B.

The work will be considered "done" if the package is delivered to point B.

Basic expectation: the package is not broken and it's delivered in the promised time. If it's a next-day delivery, it should be the next day.

Basic plus expectation: the package is delivered in much shorter time than expected. An intimation of delivery is made to the sender.

Enhanced expectation: the package is delivered in a much shorter time. An intimation of delivery is made to the sender. The courier person is really nice.
