Time for action — installing Xcode with the Mac App Store (easy)


We'll now discover if the Mac App Store is available on your Mac and install Xcode if it is.

  1. 1. From the Apple icon on the far-left of the menu bar, select App Store to open the store.

    Note

    If you can't find the menu button, it means your Mac OS version doesn't support the Mac App Store. To update your OS, select the Apple icon and choose Software Update. Complete any required updates and start this exercise again.

    If you still don't see the Mac App Store, skip ahead to the next exercise—installing Xcode manually.

  2. 2. With the App Store open, search for Xcode or visit http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/xcode/id448457090 to automatically open Xcode.

    Note

    Older versions of Mac OS X, before Lion, may try and charge you to download Xcode from the Mac App Store. If Xcode doesn't appear as a free download, follow the manual steps in the next exercise instead, to install it for free.
