Introduction


Avid Media Composer offers a great deal of audio manipulation capabilities, including volume adjustment, pan adjustment, equalization (EQ), both segment-based, and track-based effects (for example, reverb) and, now in Version 6, the capability to mix in 5.1 and 7.1 surround sound. This chapter will focus on many of the common audio mixing and effects tasks and challenges when working in a mono or stereo project.

  • As Media Composer evolves, so does the terminology. At the time of writing, here are the audio related terminology changes to be aware of:

    • Sample Plot display has been renamed Waveform display

    • Energy Plot display has been removed

    • Auto Gain (short for Automation Gain) has been renamed Volume Automation

  • At the time of writing, Media Composer provides 24 mono audio tracks, 24 stereo tracks, 24 Surround Sound Tracks, or any combination of them.

  • At the time of writing, Media Composer provides the ability to hear any 16 of the displayed 24 tracks. In Avid ProTools lingo, they'd...
