Isolating colors with Lumion


A technique used in some films such as Schindler's List and Sin City is called selective color, where the photo or movie is converted to black and white with some elements that are left in color. This is a post-production technique that is usually achieved by using layers and masks, but Lumion provides a fantastic effect that will help us produce a similar effect effortlessly. This means that we don't need an external application to produce the same effect. Let's see how we can use it along with some practical applications.

Getting ready

To fully understand this effect, it will be great if you have a variety of 3D models in your scene. If you want, another good way is to pick the Materials scene from the Examples tab.

How to do it…

To isolate colors using the Selective saturation effect, perform the following steps:

  1. From the right-hand side of the screen, select the Movie or Photo mode.

  2. Open the effects library using the New effect button.
