Third-Party Software: An Overview


Moodle comes with a number of core modules that include activities (for example, quiz and assignments), filters (multimedia or algebra), and blocks (calendar) as well as other components such as enrolment and authentication plug-ins, grade reports, question types, and so on. While the provided functionality sufficiently satisfies the vast majority of users, there is a growing demand for additional software.

Due to the open-source nature of Moodle and its modularity (that's what the "M" in Moodle stands for after all), it is relatively straightforward for developers to add new functionality or modify existing features. These can range from minor modifications or hacks to full-blown modules. There is a Modules and plugins link from the main Moodle page at http://moodle.org, which directs you to the database of the available third-party software.
