We've covered the types of data you can record, as follows:

  • Nodes, representing point features

  • Ways, representing linear or area features

  • Relations, representing more complex features

We've also looked at the tagging system and how the community uses and manages it:

  • Tags describe a feature in a verifiable, objective way

  • Use editor presets and existing tags to describe features where possible

  • Look in the OpenStreetMap wiki to find tags for unusual features

  • You don't need prior approval to use a new tag if you need it

In the next chapter, we'll put these to practical use, along with examples of how to map using the most common editing applications.
