Creating an ocean surface material


In this recipe, we will create the ocean surface material to add finer waves or wavelets and also wave foam under the surface. This type of interaction is frequently seen in shallower water where the wave action interacts with the plankton waste materials to produce tiny air bubbles that eventually rise to the surface near the shoreline. It will be used to add a nice contrast to the material to give a semi-transparent look to the simulation.

Getting ready

You will need the large-scale-water-05.blend saved at the end of the last recipe. Or unzip it from the large-scale-ocean.zip you downloaded at the beginning of this section.

How to do it...

We will first set up the color and reflectivity of our waves surface material.

  1. Open the large-scale-water-05.blend and select the sea-closeup object on layer 2.

  2. From the Materials panel, create a new material and name it waves.

  3. In the Diffuse tab, change the color to R 0.052, G 0.107, B 0.185. Ensure that the shader type is...
