Adding a non-repeating bump to the leaf material


So far, we have created a leaf that looks quite good but we could hardly use this repeated a few hundred times to create an ivy covering of a tree trunk for instance. It would look very false because each leaf would be exactly the same as each other. It is possible in Blender to instance a mesh object many times without increasing the memory overhead of a render. However, as you can understand, we need to find some way to add variety to the each instanced leaf.

The scanned image of the ivy leaves shown at the beginning of this section illustrates the variety from a single cutting. You may be able to see that apart from the shape variety there is also some color differences and some leaves have been damaged by insect action.

How to do it….
