Preface

Picking a color look or creating your own

FCPX's Color Board isn't only for correcting an image. Sometimes you want to alter its color properties for artistic effect and ends. Take a look at movies like Traffic, Sky Captain and The World of Tomorrow, and Pleasantville, just to name a few. Each took color and made it part of the story in their own way, manipulating the mood and moment with a little color grading, as the artistic use of the process is often called.

FCPX offers 25 aesthetic-altering effects known as Looks, 20 color presets, and, to top it off, you can also make your own preset from the Color Board and save it for reuse down the line. In this exercise, we'll take a look at all three.

How to do it...

  1. 1. Open the Effects Browser and click on the Looks category. You'll find 25 different looks that can be applied to a clip:

  2. 2. Click-and-drag the one called Cast to any one of your clips:

  3. 3. Position your playhead over the clip to see the results:

  4. 4. Make sure the clip is highlighted...
