Creating a muzzle flash


In this task you will add some muzzle flashes to the pistol and rifle, as they are fired by the guards. This will be accomplished using a multilayered sequence, some Color Mattes, and the Garbage Mattes. All of these should be familiar friends to you by this stage in the book, but here you will use them in a slightly unusual fashion.

Engage Thrusters

Use Color Mattes to create a muzzle flash. Perform the following steps to do so:

  1. Start by creating a new sequence and call it Muzzle_Flash. Use the DV Pal Widescreen settings that are used by the majority of the clips in this project.

  2. In the Project panel, open up the Images bin if it has been closed from the previous section, and create three new Color Mattes – one red, one yellow, and one white. Name them appropriately.

  3. Drag-and-drop Red_Matte onto Video 1 and press \ (backslash).

  4. Locate Sixteen-Point Garbage Matte and add it to Red_Matte on Video 1, then create a shape roughly the same, as shown in the following screenshot...
