Technical and cost comparisons

There is not a single WLAN/WPAN or WWAN technology that will fit all enterprise IoT solutions, as there are technical and cost trade-offs with each technology. In this section, we will explore these trade-offs between the various IoT wireless technology choices. In Figure 3.4, we compare the WLAN/WPAN technologies discussed earlier with cellular LPWA where we chose LTE-M as the comparison cellular technology:

As shown in Figure 3.4, the range, power consumption, and data throughput vary across technologies. There is an inherent trade-off between these features where, for example, it is possible to increase range by lowering data throughput and vice versa. Given these trade-offs, it is important to determine the required coverage/range, power budget, and data throughput for your enterprise IoT solution to select the optimal wireless technology.
