We've been experimenting with simple geared rotation motors for the wheels and sensors. However, robots have moving parts, such as limbs or sensor mounts, that do more than drive around. In this chapter, we'll look at how to make parts of the robot that articulate using servo motors.
Servo motors can make precise and repeatable motions, which are vital for moving sensors, robot legs, or arms to a known position. Servo motors are useful for engineers to predict robot behavior, so a robot can repeat things in automation or move limbs to accurately respond to what their sensors are instructing them. Raspberry Pi or add-on boards can control servo motors. We will explore these motors, connect them to our robot, link them to the MQTT message bus, and then use these motors to attach a pan-and-tilt mechanism. The mechanism behaves as a head for movable sensors.
