Chapter 5. Introduction to Metal

We are still working with the new features of iOS 8, and in this chapter, we are going to talk about Metal. To work with graphics in mobile devices is not an easy task especially with complex graphics and 3D. Mobile devices are limited resources, and you have to care about your performance and battery usage. We used to use OpenGL ES or other high-level APIs such as SceneKit, but these tools don't give you full power and control to optimize performance. That's why Apple has come up with Metal, and they claimed that it's the lowest overhead access to the GPU.
