Making sure you don't lose your iPhone

You can't use your iPhone if you can't find it. So, after securing your iPhone with passcodes, Touch ID, or Face ID, set up tracking so that you can find your iPhone in case you misplace it (or in case someone steals it).

The idea behind tracking a lost iPhone is that you can find it again. If for some reason you cannot retrieve your iPhone, then you can remotely wipe all the data so that a thief cannot access your personal data.

Tracking your iPhone requires using iCloud, which requires an Apple ID. Once you turn on tracking, you'll be able to track your iPhone using any device that can access iCloud, such as a computer or an iPad.

Setting up tracking

Since tracking requires an Apple ID, by default, tracking is turned off. To turn tracking on, follow these steps:

  1. Tap the Settings icon on the Home screen.
  2. Tap the Apple ID at the top of the screen that displays your name, as shown in Figure 3.7:
