Targeting the Retina display


The iPhone 4 introduced the world to the Retina display. It packs four times the number of pixels into the same screen found on earlier models, providing the sharpest images yet seen on a mobile device.

Those using Flash Professional CS5.5 and at least AIR 2.6 can use the full 640x960 resolution provided by Retina display iPhones and iPod touches.

Getting ready

From the book's accompanying code samples, open chapter8\recipe2\recipe.fla into Flash Professional CS5.5.

This FLA has been provided as a starting point and has a dynamic text field named output sitting on the stage. We will use this text field to report whether or not the app is being run on a Retina display device.

While this recipe's example app will run on an iPad, it won't target its 768x1024 screen resolution. Instead, it will simulate a standard resolution iPhone/iPod touch.
