Autodiscover was first introduced with Exchange 2007 and allows any Autodiscover-capable client such as Outlook or most Exchange ActiveSync-enabled mobile devices, to retrieve its profile configuration settings by itself. Before Exchange 2007, it was up to the administrator to configure a user's Outlook profile with the correct server settings. This also meant that if a configuration parameter changed, the profile often had to be updated manually.
