There are primarily two types of EBS volumes available for you to choose from. One is based on Solid State Drive (SSD) and the other is based on Hard Disk Drive (HDD). EBS is designed for 99.999% service availability and 0.1% to 0.2% Annual Failure Rate (AFR). This means that you may hardly lose 1 to 2 EBS volumes if you are running 1,000 volumes. The industry standard failure rate for the hard drive is around 4%. AWS EBS Volume AFR is far below the industry average, which makes it more suitable to run the production workload. You can choose EBS SSD for your IOPS needs or you can choose EBS HDD for your Throughput needs.
