Overview of this book

This book will start with the fundamentals of C programming and programming topics, such data types, functions, decision making, program loops, pointers, and structures, with the help of an Arduino board. Then you will get acquainted with Arduino interactions with sensors, LEDs, and autonomous systems and setting up the Arduino environment. Moving on you will also learn how to work on the digital and analog I/O, establish serial communications with autonomous systems, and integrate with electronic devices. By the end of the book, you will be able to make basic projects such as LED cube and smart weather system that leverages C.

Preface

LED cube

In previous chapters, we were introduced to LEDs and learnt how we can use an LED with our Arduino. In this section, we will learn how we can use a number of LEDs. We will form a cube by using a number of LEDSs and programs with our Arduino to control all the LEDs from the microcontroller. Before going any further, let's construct the cube. We will build a 3x3x3 LED cube. This means that we will be controlling 3x3x3= 27 LEDs. The 27 LEDs will be connected in such a way that they construct a cube. Each side will have nine LEDs.

See the following image to understand the positions of the LEDs:

This is a three dimensional cube. From the image you can see that there are three layers (L1, L2, and L3). Each layer has nine LEDs. We will make three layers and then join them together. Let's make a layer first.

You need to make a 3x3 structure to hold the LEDs while connecting them and soldering. The structure can be made of wood/plastic/cardboard or any hard plane thing. You need to drill...
