The Cisco File System and its purpose

The Cisco IOS File System allows you to work with files and directories just like you would have done back in the day of DOS, or should I say MSDOS. The following table gives the commands and a brief description of each command:

dir

As in Windows or DOS, this will give you a list of directories that exist.

copy

The copies your run, start, flash even used to upgrade. Just make sure to be careful what you're copying into your router.

As with Unix, this will let you look at a text file on a card.

show file

This command will give you more detailed information on your file or file systems.

delete

Avoid this command; it has a level 15 privilege, and you could accidentally delete your IOS or configurations—OUCH!!
